The in vitro evidence for an effect of high homeopathic potencies--a systematic review of the literature.

This meta-analysis evaluated 67 in-vitro biological experiments in 75 research publications and found that the effects of homeopathic preparations were reported in nearly 75% of all replicated studies. One example of a series of in-vitro experiments in homeopathy is the model of the allergic response to antibodyies using the human basophil degranulation test.
Results have been reproduced in several independent laboratories,13, 14 as well as in a multi-centre series of experiments.15

In vitro evaluation of the antiviral effects of the homeopathic preparation Gripp-Heel on selected respiratory viruses.

Gripp-Heel is a homeopathic preparation frequently used in the treatment of respiratory viral infections such as various types of influenza and the common cold. The antiviral activity of Gripp-Heel was studied in vitro on human pathogenic enveloped and nonenveloped RNA and DNA viruses.
Gripp-Heel demonstrated dose-dependent in vitro activity (significant reductions of infectivity by 20% to 40%) against Human herpesvirus 1, Human adenovirus C serotype 5, Influenza A virus, Human respiratory syncytial virus, Human parainfluenza virus 3, Human rhinovirus B serotype 14, and Human coxsackievirus serotype A9.

Antiviral activity of Engystol: an in vitro analysis.

RESULTS: A 73% reduction of Adeno 5 specific proteins and an 80% reduction in HSV-1 specific proteins were observed in ELISAs of virus-infected cells treated with Engystol after infection. The effects appeared to be dose-dependent. With these viruses, similar results were observed in titration assays of viral offspring from cells treated with Engystol. Pretreatment of adenovirus with Engystol did not inhibit the infectivity of the virus suspension and no Engystol-induced stimulation of interferon-alpha could be observed. Plaque-reduction assays with the RNA viruses, RSV and HRV, showed reductions in infectivity by 37% (RSV) and 20% (HRV), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate antiviral activity of Engystol independent of the activation of the cellular interferon system.

Antiviral action of Euphorbium compositum and its components.

INTRODUCTION: Euphorbium compositum SN (Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH, Baden-Baden, Germany, a homeopathic combination preparation available in form of drops, nasal spray, and injection solution), is prescribed for inflammation of the mucosae of the nose and sinuses. Infections in these areas are primarily of viral origin although bacterial superinfections are also common. OBJECTIVE: The main question was whether or not this homeopathic remedy shows an activity against viruses responsible for infections of the respiratory tract. RESULTS: Analysis of virus production after treatment of the infected cells with the remedy showed an antiviral activity of Euphorbium compositum SN against RSV and HSV-1. In addition, an antiviral effect against influenza A virus and HRV, though minimal, was, also noted. Analyses of the plant-derived components of Euphorbium compositum SN, e.g. Euphorbium resinifera, Pulsatilla pratensis and Luffa operculata for their antiviral activity revealed a clear activity of Euphorbium resinifera and Pulsatilla pratensis against RSV. In contrast, no effect was detected using the same protocol with Luffa operculata. CONCLUSIONS: Euphorbium resinifera and Pulsatilla pratensis as components of Euphorbium compositum SN are responsible for its antiviral activity. Copyright 2001 S. Karger GmbH, Freiburg

[Treatment of inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract -- comparison of a homeopathic complex remedy with xylometazoline]

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of treatment of inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract (rhinitis, uncomplicated sinusitis) with local decongestants is to relieve obstruction and to improve associated symptoms. Restoration of unrestricted respiration and drainage of the nasal sinuses reduce the risk of further complications (i.e. chronicity). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the therapeutic effects of the homeopathic complex remedy Euphorbium compositum nasal drops SN are comparable to those of xylometazoline with respect to efficacy and tolerability. RESULTS: Clinically relevant reductions in the intensities of disease-specific symptoms were observed with both therapies. Non-inferiority of the homeopathic complex remedy to xylometazoline could be shown for all studied variables and in no case did the lower boundary of the 95% confidence interval cross the threshold of 0.5 score points. Tolerability was good with for both therapies. CONCLUSIONS: This cohort study indicates a comparable efficacy and tolerability profile of the homeopathic complex remedy Euphorbium compositum nasal drops SN and the reference substance xylometazoline in patients with inflammatory processes and diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
